This year North Coast Electric is proud to be sponsoring
Special Olympics Washington and
Special Olympics Oregon. The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round training and athletic competition through a variety of sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Special Olympics has expanded over the years and has touched thousands of lives.
Barb Carver recently attended the Special Olympics "
Breakfast with Champions" in Seattle. Over 1,000 people were there to support this moving and well organized fundraiser. "Inclusion, Dignity and Hope" was the theme stressed throughout the program.
Today, Special Olympics offer much more than just athletic competition:
- Healthy Athletes Program gives free health screenings
- Motor Activities Training Program enables the chronically disabled to develop and strengthen motor skills for increased independence
- Athlete Leadership Program offers opportunities for social and emotional growth through coaching, public speaking,and/or serving as a board member
- And lastly, a program that is new to Washington, Young Athletes, which offers early childhood development opportunities to children with intellectual disabilities, ages two through seven. This program promotes motor, social and cognitive development through physical activity and play, with an emphasis on sports skill development. Previously, eligibility to the Special Olympics was eight years of age.
